In search for the best fish and chip shop? We can help! Using our intelligent data software, ukphonebook.com, you can search for all the best local hotspots! And in good ol’ British fashion, we HAD to find the best chippy!

A quick and easy search on ukphonebook.com shows Southend has the most fish and chips shops in the UK!

Our website uses highly accurate and up-to-date business data from multiple sources, including Companies House. So, you can let us worry about the research!

So, how can you use ukphonebook.com to do this? We looked at which postcode areas have the highest concentration of businesses listed as ‘Fish and Chip Shops’.

The top 10 locations with the most Fish and Chip shops are:

Post code area Total Businesses Classed as ‘Fish and Chip Shops’
Southend-on-Sea 75
Swansea 56
Brighton 50
Blackpool 48
Scarborough 47
Bournemouth 45
Torquay45
Great Yarmouth41
Lowestoft31
Poole31

It’s no surprise to find that all the top 10 towns are coastal, because local fish is always the best! The most popular areas are dotted across the country with:

  • 5 on the South Coast
  • 2 on the East Coast
  • 1 each in the North East, North West and Wales.

Southend is the best place for fish and chips!

So where’s the ‘plaice’ to be for fish and chips… See what we did there? Southend is a favourite seaside resort for those on the South Coast and in London. And they clearly have a taste for deep fried fish with a whopping 75 chippies within the SS0 postcode region!

Cllr Daniel Nelson, cabinet member for economic growth and investment at Southend-on-Sea City Council, said: “It is no surprise we have more fish and chips than any other place in the UK because we are also the best seaside resort to visit in the UK.

“There is nothing more quintessentially British than a trip to the seaside with a bag of chips, and whether you are walking on our famous prom and or enjoying the view from the world's longest pleasure pier, Southend and its wonderful chippies offer everything that is great about the great British seaside.”
- Frankly, we couldn’t agree more!

Many of the Southend fish and chip shops are family-run, and you can choose to sit in or take away and enjoy the seafront!

Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said: “It is great to see Southend has a thriving fish and chip industry with so many businesses in the area.

“The sector has had many challenges in recent times, but it is testament to nations love of fish and chips and their continued support that many fish and chip businesses are still there to serve their local communities.

“Independent hospitality businesses are so culturally important, especially fish and chip shops with our long heritage. It’s fantastic that ukphonebook.com are shining a spotlight on small businesses.”

Swansea, while less known for its beaches and seaside life, is a popular coastal destination and has a huge array of fish and chip shops.

Scarborough beat off stiff competition to boast the most fish and chip shops in the North East – more than the likes of Whitby (17), South Shields (22) and Bridlington (23).

If you want to do a tour of some of the best chippies in the UK, the East Coast rivals the South West.

On the East coast, the neighbouring towns of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft have over 72 chippies between them. While the South West boasts 121 fish and chip shops in Torquay, Poole and Bournemouth.

Who has the most chip shops per person?

If we think about the size of the area we’re talking about, we get a slightly different picture.

Our ukphonebook.com data from 2023 was compared to this year’s population data to get a picture of just how many people per chip shop there are, (so you can avoid the queues!)

While Ingoldmells in Lincolnshire has just 20 fish and chip shops, it has a population of just over 2,300 people – which means there’s one fish and chip shop for every 120 people.

Colin Frith, Head of Business Development at ukphonebook.com, who loves a Chippy, said:

“Our data shows that it does tend to be the larger towns with the most chip shops. But, if you want to avoid the queues while ordering your haddock and chips, we suggest aiming for smaller towns.”

“If you’re looking for a mix of a large population centre and an array of places to buy fish and chips, we recommend Torquay”
