Call Rates For 08 Numbers

The cost of calling a 08 number depends whether or not it is a freephone line. It’s also important to consider the type of calls that are included in your mobile or landline phone package.

What is a 08 number?

If you’re in the UK, a 08 number is a non-geographic telephone number. This means that it isn’t attributed to any particular area of the country.

08 numbers are set up by an organsation to provide a particular special service to users.

Setting up a non-geographic 08 number is also a way for businesses to reflect their national service area. This can counteract the perception of a company being limited to serving just one local area only.

Examples of 08 numbers include:

  • A customer service line for a business
  • A charity helpline
  • A government service line such as jobseekers allowance
  • A competition entry line

What is an 0800 number?

A number beginning with 0800 is the most common freephone number, which does not cost a user to call. The other common freephone number prefix used by UK businesses is 0808.

Since July 2015, these two freephone numbers have been guaranteed as free to call from both landlines and mobiles.

This overhaul came after a major review by telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, which found that some mobile users were still been charged in some cases when dialling 0800 or 0808.

Are all 08 numbers free to call?

The freephone numbers starting with 0800 and 0808 are free to call. However, there are other 08 numbers, including those starting with 084 and 087, which will incur a charge.

The easiest way to remember whether a number is a freephone is therefore to look out for a ‘080’ prefix.
